Osteoporosis

Taking Fosomax within the guidelines

10/27/2006

Question:

When taking Fosomax, the instructions specify to take on an empty stomach first thing in the morning with a full glass of water. I always thought that had something to do with preventing stomach problems. However do those instructions on taking Fosomax have more to do with the benefit to the bones and system than with problems with digestion?

Answer:

The instructions for taking Fosamax and other bisphosphonates are important for the protection of the esophagus as well as for proper absorption of the medication.  When food or fluids besides water are taken with those medications, the medication will not be absorbed and your time and money are being wasted.
