Recovery process of crushed vertebrae

09/22/2006

Question:

I crushed and broke L1 in a fall. What is the recovery process, what can I do and the time frame. They told me walking was the best excersise, if so they didn`t say how far or how often. What type of excersise can I do and when can I do them to speed up or help in the recovery process? I want to do all I can but I don`t want to cause further injury. Thank you.

Answer:

Fracture of a spinal vertebra can be an extremely serious matter. In the worst situation such a fracture needs special attention and activity could result in serious or permanent neurological injury. Your doctor, guided by special images [CT scan or plain X-rays] needs to advise you what activity is safe for you. With time and adequate healing you will be able to resume certain exercises. This should be guided by your individual situation.
