Lung scarring09/25/2006 |
After having an x-ray of my lungs and diagnosed with bilateral upper lung zone scar ith upper retraction of the hila. Heart size is not enlarged.I was born 7-8-33 and am able to exercise quite vigorously without experiencing any shortness of breath. How worried should Ibe? What follow up tests, if any should I have? What usually causes this condition.
When the lung scars, the lung tissue contracts which is what causes the hilar retraction-as the scarring contracts it retracts or pulls the hila, the central area connecting the lung's blood vessels and airways to the rest of the body, upward.
Upper zone scarring can be caused by exposure to silica dust, silicosis, exposure to asbestosis, ankylosing spondylitis, sarcoidosis, cystic fibrosis, and prior infections. It would be best to talk with your physician who knows your medical history and has seen your x-rays to determine which of these processes or possibly something else might have caused your lung scarring.
