Abnormal fingernail growth

10/03/2006

Question:

My one fingernail is growing the wrong way.... the one side is growing outward... any ideas of why this is happening?

Answer:

It is hard to give you a differential diagnosis.  I do not know your age, history of trauma, and what are the characteristics of the nails.  A sudden change in the direction of growth is frequently associated with some kind of growth in the nail bed.  These can be benign or malignant tumors, they can be infectious, so that any differential on my part would be meaningless at this point.  Please see your board certified dermatologist so that appropriate examination can occur, biopsy if needed, and x-rays of your finger to determine the true cause of the problem.
