Post menopausal pelvic discomfort/pain

10/11/2006

Question:

60 yr old female. Recent normal pap test and pelvic manual exam. Jan 2004 pelvic ultrasound normal. Pelvic discomfort/pain during the last week. Area is lower abdomen/pelvis and pain is dull ache. Very worried about ovarian cancer.

Any other possible causes for pelvic pain? Other history: antral gastritis, hemorrhoids, recent negative occult stool test

Answer:

Causes for pain felt in the pelvis usually are from the bladder (examples – cystitis) or colon (example – diverticulosis). Sometimes arthritis from the hips or back can cause pain; rarely will hernias. Ovarian cancer rarely causes pain.

It sounds like you are doing a great job with keeping up with your wellness exams (Pap tests, stool tests). However, if the pain persists, it would be worthwhile talking to your doctor about finding out the reason for your pain. A few simple tests should be able to pin down the reason.
