Alzheimer's Disease and Motor Function

10/25/2006

Question:

Does Alzheimer`s disease affect motor function, ie: does the person have periods of difficulty with balance?

Answer:

Alzheimer’s can affect motor function, usually later in the illness. Early on there may be problems remembering skilled motor acts. Later more basic functions like walking can be affected.

If motor problems occur early in an illness, it may be a sign of a different illness and a neurologist should be sought out.
