Allergic reaction to ibuprofen?

11/22/2006

Question:

I have recently had 4 bouts of hives, intense itching, (mostly between fingers and toes, chest pain and my torso became beet red about a half hour after taking Advil and cvs ibuprophen. I`, a 44 year old male, no known allergies and healthy. could i have become allergic to ibuprophen ? Thanks

Answer:

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents like ibuprofen are frequent causes of these types of reactions.   I would avoid all NSAIDS for the time being.  Tylenol is good for headaches and safe to take.  If you need an NSAID in the future, you should see a board certified internal medicine trained allergist for further evaluation which may include an oral graded challenge (a form of desensitization) that will allow you to tolerate these agents in the future.  Go to www.aaaai.org to find an allergist in your region.
