Is TURP Surgery For an 90 Year Old With Dementia Too Risky?11/21/2006 |
I was wondering your opinion on having TURP surgery for a 90 year man who overall doesn`t have any underlying chronic conditions but is weak and has bad dementia. We are contemplating keeping the foley in and getting home health care or doing the surgery and hoping there are no complications with anesthesia or otherwise. Some say it`s too risky, others say it is worth it. Any opinion would be appreciated. Thanks.
Certainly a TURP or even some of the new less invasive therapies for enlarged prostates are very effective, but they still carry some risk associated with the procedure. Other options include long term foley catheter use or the placement of a suprapubic tube, although these options have an increased risk of infections.
