Trichomoniasis-metronidazole allergy

12/04/2006

Question:

I have been diagnosed with trichomoniasis. My doctor prescribed metronidazole, but I had very adverse reactions to it. He now has prescribed oxycycline. Is this antibiotic as effective in combatting the parasite as metronidazole?

Answer:

The antibiotic of choice for treating trichomoniasis is metronidazole, either in oral form or by vaginal cream.  The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) does not mention oxycycline (or doxycyline) as being a treatment option for this condition.  There is no evidence that this antibiotic is as effective, or even effective, in treating trichomoniasis.  If you have already started taking oxycylince (or doxycycline), then you should have a repeat exam after treatment to make sure that it has been effective.  More information about this condition can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/std/trichomonas/STDFact-Trichomoniasis.htm.
