Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders

Frequent sore throats and mouth changes.

12/14/2006

Question:

I had strep over a month ago and was put on meds. went back to doc. a week later because my throat still hurt they did the test and it came back neg. My problem is that 6 weeks later my throat is still red and my throat and mouth have what looks like broken blood vessels, capillariies all over. I still get frequent sore throats but not like when I had strep. I also have little pimple or blister looking things inside my mouth. (they have been there 1 1/2-2 months} I was diagnosed by 2 diff. derms as having fordyce`s condition on my lips, (this was before I had anything in my mouth). I also went to a dentist last week because I have small white bump on the roof of my mouth, it has been there over a month and has grown some, doesn`t hurt or bleed ect. the dentist said to keep an eye on it and see if it grows, it has already grown, that is why I went to him. I have also been to an ENT and he put the scope down my throat and found no growths or tumors, he did say I have a deviated semptum and that I may have reflux that might be the cause of my red sore throat, He also said my throat was swollen. I have never really had a relux or heartburn problem, I have been on acephex for almost a month now, but I don`t notice any change, i don`t think it is reflux, but I am always congested I now snore really bad at night and I breath mainly through my mouth because I am congested, so some mornings my mouth and throat are really dry and sore. The ENt also put me on a nasal spray. I am a 35 year old smoker, so having all these things wrong in my mouth and throat is really freaking me out. Should I go and get second opinions? I am scared about the lump and the other growths, broken vessels ect. Sorry to ramble just wanted to give you all the info. I have an appt. with my dentist in 2 weeks and I see my ent again in 3 weeks so I am not putting any of this off. I am staying on top of it all. Can you think of anything that would cause these things? Oh and before you tell me to quit smoking, I did 8 days ago, but it is not long enough to be considered a non smoker. thanks for any info. you can give me.

Answer:

It would not be unusual for the throat to remain injected or inflamed looking for some time after a strep throat infection.  I am sure your ENT physician would have recognized any lumps of concern in your mouth and throat, but if you are concerned, it never hurts to get a second opinion.
