I had a stroke 3 1/2 years ago and would like to know the newest treatments. I have nerve damage in my left arm & left leg, it is hard for me to walk since I have hyperextended my left knee.
There are a variety of new rehabilitation treatments being tested, very few have been rigorously evaluated as yet.
Perhaps the most accepted strategy is constraint-induced therapy, where patients have their unaffected limb put in a cast or glove, and are thus forced to use the stroke-affected side.
A variety of other therapies are being tested. Please go to www.rehablab.org to see several of these. You could consider being a subject in ongoing clinical trials if you live in the Cincinnati metropolitan region, or could see if these trials are being offered at a center closer to you.
