Safety on use of tylenol and motrin together

01/08/2007

Question:

I just read on you website that using the above 2 OTCs can be used together to reduce a fever in a child. Is this really safe? I just read another website where an MD states not to do this due to the potential toxic effect on the kidneys (especially since parents may overuse the frequency of the doses). Your answer had no specifics, and I would like a clarification on this or any additional info you can offer. Thank you.

Answer:

Ibuprofen and acetaminophen are different classes of chemical compounds, which may allow them to be used together or in tandem.  I cannot comment on another MD's opinion as I have not read it fully nor do I know the context of the question that was asked.  Because parent may overuse the frequency of the dose(s), certainly is not a justification for or against the use of any number of medications as overuse of a single medication can be deadly.

With any medication, it is critically important to follow the dosing information both in terms of amount and frequency as that is the most likely way to insure success of the medication and minimization of the side effects.  As with so many medical questions, the best source of information comes from the primary care provider whom you trust, that individual knows you and your medical history.  Please seek their opinion on this or any matter that concerns you or your child's health and well being.
