Yeast infections?01/11/2007 |
I am gay with a girlfriend long distance. We see each other and engage in oral sex and rubbing naked on top of each other about every 5-6 weeks. The last 6 times we had sex, my girlfriend developed signs and symptomps of yeast infection within 4-5 days after with redness itching and a light whitish discharge. I went to my GYN 3 months ago and had cultures showing yeast and bacteria. I was treated with Diflucan and Clindymycin cream x 7days. She also has used multiple Monistat and Diflucan. It seems to take a while for her symptoms to disappear, but everytime we have sex-symptoms re-appear.She has never had intercourse and is very clean with her hygeine.I am 48 years old, healthy and starting symptomps of menopause. Can the cause of her recurrent yeast infections be my vaginal ph?? It has to be me that is causing this to happen. Any suggestions?? I feel like its my vaginal problem and i have no symptoms!! I even used Monistat prophalactally last time before we had sex and she still got this yeast infection. I don`t have any std`s. The first 2-3 times we had sex ther wasn`t any problem, WHY NOW?? I went to my doctor since then. He has no explanation!!HELP!!!
Recurrent yeas infections need to be documented by culture or examination of the discharge in the lab because many times it isn't a yeast infection that is causing the symptoms. Documented recurrent yeast infections can be caused by a drop in the immune system because of HIV or because of poor blood sugar control of diabetes. You should be screened for both. Rather, your partner should be screened since she is the one with the symptoms. I don't think the cause of her symptoms have to do with your vaginal pH or whether or not you had a yeast infection. Most studies of couples (albeit heterosexual couples) didn't find that treating the partner reduced the incidence of recurrence. If you are using any sexual aids such as lubricants, etc or even the oral bacteria, then she may be more prone to yeast infections OR an imbalance of normal vaginal bacteria which will cause similar symptoms. That is why it is important to make sure it is not something other than yeast.
