Obesity and Weight Management

How to calculate BMI

01/19/2007

Question:

Can you tell me how to calculte my BMI?

Answer:

The BMI (body mass index) is a mathematical formula using your weight and height that predicts the development of health problems related to excess weight.  You can determine your BMI by multiplying your weight in pounds by 705 and divide that number by your height in inches.  Take the resulting number and divide by your height in inches again.

BMI = 705 x wt (in lbs.)

           (ht in inches)2

Normal:  BMI between 18.5 and 24.9

Overweight:  BMI between 25 and 29.9

Obese:  BMI >/= 30
