Abnormal pap smear

01/25/2007

Question:

I have a history of abnormal pap smears and the proper following evaluation, then told that there was no real problem. Following the birth of my first child the pap smear showed abnormalities again. I am currently waiting on a repeat pap smear to occur in June 2007. Does childbirth affect the outcome of a pap smear? also, does having a history of abnormal pap smears increase my chances of cervical cancer?

Answer:

Pregnancy doesn't have any adverse effects on the cervix. In fact, the healing of the cervix after childbearing can fix some problems. It depends on the abnormality, but most serious abnormalities do increase your chances of cervical cancer. With proper follow up of an abnormal Pap smear, the chances of an abnormal cervix progressing to cervical cancer is VERY rare. Most abnormalities are early warning signs that can be treated years before developing into cervical cancer.
