Breast Cancer

Breast Weight

12/09/1998

Question:

Has anyone ever calculated the average weight of a woman's breast?

Answer:

The volume of a woman's breast is quite varied. It depends upon the woman's lean body mass, her posture and physique or body build, age and the ovarian functional status. At menopause, when there is less estrogen influence on the breast structure, there is less fat and glandular components which reduces the volume. Spratt and Donegan calculate the nonlacting breast to weigh between 150 grams to 225 grams. The lactating breast can weigh as much as 500 grams.
