Cervical polyps and intercourse

02/06/2007

Question:

I recently went to my family physician with a concern about watery discharge and bleeding (not related to my period). She did an internal examination and found a cervical polyp that she described as quite large and vascular. She then referred me on to an OB-GYN and I have an appointment to see him in approximately two months. My question is, can I safely have intercourse with my partner while I am waiting to see the Ob-gyn? I am also wearing a tampon at all times due to the discharge and bleeding. Is this ok or I am irritating the polyp? Thanks.

Answer:

It is OK to continue being sexually active with a cervical polyp. They are benign growths from the cervix that are not serious. They are easily removed in the office. They do cause some post-coital bleeding in many women.
