Bleeding after pap smear

02/06/2007

Question:

The other day I went in for my yearly. Everything went fine but then later that night I started spot bleeding. This is still continuing 3 days later. It`s not a lot, but I`m shocked. This hasn`t ever happened before. Im supposed to start my period next week. Is this something that happens a lot?

Answer:

Bleeding after a Pap smear is very common. The cervix is very delicate with numerous superficial blood vessels. This can be disrupted during a Pap Smear and cause bleeding. It can last 2-3 days. It does not injure the cervix in anyway If the bleeding persists, you should be seen to make sure there are no other reasons like infection.
