Do I need to see a doctor right away?

02/14/2007

Question:

I have been taking YAZ birth control for about three months when I started having signs of pregnancy .. nausea, migriane headaches, excessive fatigue and a missed period. I took three pregnancy test over the course of two weeks after my missed period and they were all neg. I finally had a light period confirming I wasn`t pregnant. Then the other night my heart started pounding extremely hard and fast (my husband took my pulse ..it was 250 plus beats per minute). He said I turned bright red. I have had episodes like this before but not as intense and not for as long. My heart beat was irregular as well. After I felt like I had run up a mountain. I have had blood test come back that say my blood coagulates too much, and also my thyroid is borderline. I might be over reacting but should I be worried about blood clots, or stroke? I am 33 years old and have three children the youngest is five months old. What is my next step? Do I need to see a specific doctor like a heart doctor? Or should I just consult my family phycisian

Answer:

Your family physician would be a good start, as he or she can look at your total care (as opposed to just your heart).  It also sounds like your family physician would want to have a cardiologist see you, as a heart rate at 250 beats per minute is too high, especially if you have palpitations (heart beating irregularly).  Also, if you have a blood clotting disorder, you may want to consider a non-hormonal type of birth control, as all birth control pills increase the risk of blood clots.  So, I would encourage you to see your family physician now, and ask for a consult to a cardiologist (heart doctor).
