Multiple bowel movement

02/14/2007

Question:

My 2 week old baby have been having multiple bowel movements. He poops 6 to 8 times a day. Is this normal for a breast fed baby to poop this many times in a day?

Answer:

I am very happy to say that this is entirely normal. These frequent bowel movements (BM) are very helpful in preventing jaundice since bilirubin is excreted in the BM.

You will find that your baby's bowel movement patterns will change frequently as your baby grows. This is not a cause for concern as long as the BMs are soft and easy to pass, even if they do not occur every day or even for several days.

Keep up the great job offering your baby the best food possible, breast milk! Congratulations on your healthy baby!
