Ear, Nose, and Throat Disorders

Throat irritation r/t bumps on base of tongue

03/02/2007

Question:

For about the past three weeks I have a constant feeling of irritation in my throat as if something is lodged in my throat right behind my Adams apple. I finally stuck my finger down there (cant see it) to see what what going on and felt 4-6 large bumps on the base of my tongue in my esophagus. I have never had this problem before. Is it possible this is HPV of the throat? If so, are there any treatments available?

Answer:

Irritation and a feeling of a lump in the throat can be from several causes.  First, a viral infection can cause burning in the throat and the sensation of a lump.  Allergies and post nasal drainage can also give this sensation.  Acid reflux can cause burning in the throat and the sensation of a lump.  The bumps you are feeling in the back of your mouth are most likely tonsil tissue in the base of tongue.  HPV is unlikely the source of your complaints.  An evaluation by an ENT physician may help elucidate the cause of your symptoms and provide treatment.
