Calcium and Vitiam D while taking Prednisone

03/20/2007

Question:

I have been on Prednisone for 2 years and my doctor wants me to start taking Calcium and Vitiam D. I am 33 years old and have had RA for 3 years. How much calcium and vitiam D do I need to take?

Answer:

It is recomended that people take 1500 mg of calcium daily. Most of us get a few hundred mg in our diet, especially if we eat some milk products, so taking a 500 or 600 mg pill twice a day is probably enough.

At least 400 mg of Vitamin D seems to be the current target, but a surprising number of people are Vitamin D deficient and require more. It might be useful to have your blood Vitamin D level checked, to see if you need more. Some calcium pills come with Vitamin D in them.
