Extremely sore breasts after menstrual cycle

04/09/2007

Question:

As a helthy 36 yr old mom of three I have always been very regular with my menstrual cycles which in the past normally include a period of about three or four days of tender breasts and irritability before menses. During this last cycle I started my period on time but am now into my 13th day and I am still having some bleeding. In addition to this, instead of breast tenderness before my cycle, i have been experiencing EXTREME tenderness since the fourth day of my period. Is this something I need to be concerned about? Or is this possibly the start of perimenopause?

Answer:

It sounds as if you are having some hormonal changes although 36 may be a bit early for menopause. Have you changed contraceptive techniques lately? If your breasts are red or warm, it’s important for them to be looked at as you might have an infection. If you are having any discharge from your nipple(s) it is also important to be seen. If the vaginal bleeding doesn’t stop in the next couple of days, you need to be seen to determine the cause, especially if the volume of bleeding is still moderate to heavy.

Hope this helps.
