Urinary Disorders

I`m really scared

04/06/2007

Question:

I have a multitude of problems. However, I have recently began having trouble with my left side - kidney? It is difficult to explain, but I will try. I have to sleep on my side, either one. I cannot sleep on my back or stomach. However, recently, I cannot lay on my left side. To make matters worse, I cannot lay down with my arm (elbow region) anywhere across this region. I have been running fever - between 99.5 and 101 - for some time. The only time it goes down is when I take something for the fever, but it rarely goes away completely. If it does, it is for a short time (a day - max.).

Each month, I have to give a urnine sample, and there has not been one time that it has not contained blood (moderate to heavy). Except, lately, I have been able to actually see the blood in my urine. Although I have to go to the restroom several hundred times a day (thirteen times in a two and a half time span) and the amount is significant even if I not consumed any drinks, I have difficulty getting it out. I have any had to resort to using a cath. At first, I thought the blood in my urine was somehow caused by my female organs, I have learned this is impossible because I use a cath to produce the sample.

The worst part of all this is that the pain seems to radiate to my stomach. I have started to throw up on a regular basis. Sometimes every fifteen minutes. I have had kidney stones in the past, but I have had, it seems, a thousand different scans and tests and they do not show any stones at this time. The doctor did say that I have the crystallines???, which are what kidney stones are made out of, so I am confused about this point also. I am only 34, but I do smoke (20 years, a pack a day). I noticed that is seemed to be an important indicator in looking at some of the responses that have been given in this section.

Please let me know if I should be concerned, or what I should do. I appreciate your time. Thank you.

Answer:

It is common at your age to have a condition in the bladder called Interstitial Cystitis. Also due to history of heavy smoking, the cancer of the bladder lining or the inner lining of the kidneys should be considered and evaluated.

A condition called InSitu carcinoma of the urinary tract also can give similar symptoms with blood in the urine.  This condition can is not visible by cystoscopy or X-Ray. It can be diagnosed by Cytology or bladder biopsy. If you discuss all the issues with your doctors as you have with us, I am sure you will lead them to the same path I am leading you to.
