Pregnancy

Pregnant and being treated for depression

04/16/2007

Question:

Hello, I just found out that I am pregnant (5 weeks). I am currently taking medication for anxiety and depression. Do I need to start prenatal care earlier than most people? Also, how to OBs go about caring for someone like me?

Thank you!

Answer:

The use of anti-depressants during pregnancy has been a focus of great attention recently. Certain medications are better used than others and it would be wise to seek early prenatal care so your physician and your therapist can make a treatment plan for your depression that protects the baby while giving you adequate therapy.
