IV complications

06/05/2007

Question:

I recently was hospitalized for gallstone and pancreatitis. They started a 20g in my right hand. However, along side my right wrist seems to be hard like something is in there. It is not red, or edematous or warm to touch. Could the catheter tip have migrated some how or what is wrong? I cannot bend it without it hurting. Sometimes it feels sharp and shoots up to my elbow.

Answer:

If the vein where the IV was in place is irritated, you may have developed a phlebitis. This is generally treated with warm compresses. If this persists, I would see your primary care physician.
