Pregnancy

Missed abortion

04/30/2007

Question:

I found out that i am having a missed abortion about a wk ago, at about 7.5 wks gestation. I had wanted nature to take its own course but it has not happened yet. Is this dangerous? How long could this go on and will it cause me to have a worse miscarriage because it has went on so long?

Answer:

There is no commonly accepted time to wait for your body to initiate a spontaneous miscarriage. Many doctors will allow 1-2 weeks for it to occur. There is no danger to you until about 6 weeks of waiting. If you do not spontaneously start miscarrying, the two options to complete the process is for your doctor to give medications to induce the miscarriage or performing a D&C.
