Acute inflammation on pap smear

04/25/2007

Question:

My pap smears always come back with “acute inflammation present” But my doctor says that it`s normal and does not recommend a follow up sooner than usual yearly test Is that right? Should there be any additional work up?

Answer:

You could be checked for an infection with something like gonorrhea, chlamydia, yeast, trichomonas or bacterial vaginosis. In general, acute inflammation is normal so I wouldn’t be checked for the above unless you feel you could be at risk of a sexually transmitted infection or have symptoms. Your cervix is exposed to the acidity of the vagina and the normal bacteria found there. That causes some mucous like discharge that looks like inflammation. It is normal and not an infection.
