Digestive Disorders

IBS Question

12/16/1998

Question:

Dear Expert, About 4 years ago I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. My symptoms range from gassiness and bloating to pain and uncontrollable urges to relieve my bowels. In the last few months, I have tried several things to get this disorder under control, including daily metamucil, regular exercise (jogging 5x/week), daily calcium supplements, and avoiding dairy products. I have also tried combinations of these. Each time, I feel terrific for about a month, then the old IBS returns. What can I do that will have a lasting effect?

By the way, I am a 26 year old female who is otherwise quite healthy. Many thanks.

Answer:

Management of IBS is often difficult, but begins with establishing a good relationship with a physician who has expertise in this condition. Your doc can't cure your IBS, but he can make an accurate diagnosis and exclude other conditions which show up with IBS-type symptoms. Once that's done, the role of your doc is primarily to provide support and education. There is not a pill which cures this. Most folks who do well over time develop acceptance of the situation while making behavioral and dietary modifications which improve their symptoms. Ultimately, you'll know more about your IBS than anyone. A good resource on the Web is Parkview Publishing. They have a nice discussion board as well as publishing a very helpful and readable guide about managing your IBS by Dr Bill Salt. The site should show up below.

Be well!
