Breast Feeding |
How long is too long to breastfeed04/30/2007 |
when is it time to stop breast feeding
The Academy of Pediatrics recommends that "all" babies be breastfed exclusively if at all possible for at least 6 months.Solid complimentary foods should be started somewhere in the middle of the first year while continuing to breastfeed for at least the remainder of the first year.
Continuation well into the 2nd or 3rd year of the child's life is recommended, for as long as the mother and the infant or toddler so desire.
There is no limit or maximum time that breastfeeding should or may continue. The decision is a personal one between the mother and the infant.
Weaning should be very gradual, both for the psychological health of the child and for the physical health and psychological wellbeing of the mother.
