Is prometrium safe when trying to conceive?

04/30/2007

Question:

I am on prometrium 200mg days 16 through 25 to regulate my irregular periods, but the bottle says not to take if you are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant. Also if you read online articles it says not to take. But my doctor told me that it would be okay because it is prescribed for women that have had miscarriages. My husband and I are trying to conceive. Can you please clarify is this safe if you are trying to conceive?

Answer:

Prometrium is frequently used by infertility specialists to provide hormonal support to a developing pregnancy. Physicians have had a long experience of using these medications safely in early pregnancy and, despite the label, you need not be concerned.
