Addiction and Substance Abuse

Ativan and urine screens

05/03/2007

Question:

I was told that unless you do a drug urine screen very shortly after someone takes ativan ,that it will come back negative. does it matter if they use it everyday or if it is a one time thing?

Answer:

Ativan is a brand of lorazepam and belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines.  Whether these drugs are found in a urine drug test depends on the type of test being done.  One type of urine screen for benzodiazepines tests for the active metabolite or by product of the drug.  Lorazepam may not be detected by that test even though it was present.   Other drug screens do detect lorazepam.
