Eating Disorders

Concerned friend

05/02/2007

Question:

my friend has just told me she thinks i have an eating disorder, im 30 years old 5ft 7ins and weigh 8st.i thought people with eating disorders were ill and didnt eat, where as i eat something in the evening, yes i have cut down slightly on what i eat but that doesnt mean i have an eating disorder the only problems i have is dizziness and feeling cold apart from that im healthy. i feel i need to lose another 1/2 stone, do you really think i have an eating disorder as i think my friend is worrying over nothing.

Answer:

Only a professional meeting with you can make a definitive diagnosis.  However, your weight for your height is in the eating disordered range and the symptoms that you describe (dizziness and feeling cold) are indicative of an eating disorder.  I am also concerned that you wish to continue to lose weight, and it sounds as if you're only eating in the evening (rather than 3 meals/day).

I would strongly encourage you to discuss these symptoms and your weight loss plan with your regular physician.  He or she can make a better determination and help confirm whether you are indeed healthy.
