Is There Any Danger of Stopping Fosamax?06/18/2007 |
Is there a time limit on how long one should take fosomax? I am 76 years old and have been taking fosomax for 5 years with good improvement in my bone density test results. My doctor says there is no more improvement after 5 years and has taken me off the drug. Do you agree or should one go on taking it forever if there are no side effects? I have read that the improvements reverse if you are not continuing on fosomax or a similar drug. Thank you.
You are correct in thinking that people who have discontinued eventually start to lose bone. I would recommend rechecking your bone density 2 years after you stopped the drug to see whether you should restart it. Be sure to continue your calcium, vitamin D and exercise.
