Blood and Pus in Urine

05/15/2007

Question:

Hi, I am a 31 year old female. I have experieced recurring bladder infections in the last 18 months. Yesterday, a urine test showed blood (+1) and pus (+1) in my urine. My urine does not contain any visible signs of blood, does this mean that its "microscopic" blood in my urine? My doctor said that he is not too concerned because only "microscopic" blood would be a problem.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Answer:

A bladder infection can cause blood and pus in the urine. Kidney problems unrelated to infection can also cause the same result. If the blood and pus are infection related then it should clear up with treatment. If you or the doctor are concerned that it may not be infection related then I would repeat the urine testing after the infection has been treated.
