Stomach pain after intercourse

05/22/2007 03:14PM

Question:

I have noticed that each time my fiance and I have sex, the next few days I expereince stomach cramping(much similiar to the cramps I experience before my period). Is this normal? Why is this occuring? Thank you for your help.

Answer:

Pain related to sex could be from a variety of issues.  If the pain occurs during sex, it might be from some inflammatory process in the pelvis, whether from infection, endometriosis, scar tissue, or even a bowel or bladder issue.  If the pain occurs only after sex is over, it could be related to uterine contractions that are stimulated by intercourse.  Because semen can trigger such contractions, wearing a condom might help.
