Understanding the results of an MRI

06/12/2007

Question:

What is meant by mild to moderate chronic ischemic hypertensive signal within the cerebral white matter. There is no brain stem or cerbellar pathology.

Answer:

Mild to moderate chronic ischemic hypertensive signal within the cerebral white matter is very common in patients with hypertension. It is attributed to small vessel injury/disease from hypertension. The treatment is adequate control of hypertension. Moderate and severe white matter disease can lead to some cognitive impairment. At any rate, the cause is hypertension and theoretically control of hypertension should lessen the small vessel disease and hence the white matter disease.

Best regards and hope the above helps.
