Should Fosamax be Stopped After 5 Years?06/18/2007 |
I have been on Fosamax for the past 4 years, how many years can this drug be safely taken? Friends have warned me that sfter 5 years you should stop using it.
There are data for Fosamax use over 10 years. No significant safety issues have been identified. Very rare events of osteonecrosis of the jaw (primarily in cancer patients using high dose of intravenous bisphosphonates) and rare cases of atrial fibrillation (not statistically significant compared to placebo users) have received some media coverage. There is no guideline that it should be stopped at 5 years.
