Migraine headaches and menopause

01/27/1999 12:32PM

Question:

Is there a relationship between migraine headaches and menopause?

Answer:

Many women experience a worsening of migraine headaches as they approach menopause, especially those whose migraines are hormone sensitive. It is thought to be related to the fluctuating hormone levels during perimenopause. Attempting to stabilize hormone levels can help. These women often feel much better after menopause when hormones have cesased to fluctuate. Those who choose to use hormones may want to consider a constant dose regimen to avoid the headaches that may result from a cyclic pattern of hormone use.
