i dont know if this is a real eating disorder but i seem to like eating baking soda well not really eating it but just chewing it and then spiting it out and rinsing. i crave it, and cant seem to stop. ive been like this for years there has to be a negative affect on my body from doing this what can i do to kick the habit?
You are describing two different types of eating disorders. The first, Pica, is the persistent eating of non-nutritive substances. It’s most frequently seen in children and in individuals with developmental disabilities, but can be seen in adults as well. It can be potentially dangerous because of the accidental ingestion of poisons, environmental toxics, etc. Some theories suggest that it may be due to nutritional deficiencies (which cause the cravings), and a thorough medical evaluation is warranted. This individual can also refer you to someone who specializes in eating disorders.
The other behavior you describe (the chewing and then spitting out) is often seen in both anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. An eating disorder specialist can help you develop strategies to stop this behavior.
