Treatment of Manic Attacks

07/09/2007

Question:

I just got out of 48 hours in a psych ward and the doctor put me on a drug called lamictal and I also take Effexor I have taken it for a long time. But it does not seem to work anymore. This last manic attack was very bad. My attacks can turn violent.I would like any feed back from NetWellens.

Answer:

Lamictal is an effective treatment for bipolar disorder. It can help particularly with the depressed phase of the illness. Since Effexor is not as helpful as it once was, Lamictal is a treatment that might help by lowering the dose or replacing Effexor. This would be something to discuss with your physician to establish a short and long term treatment plan. Other treatments are also available.
