COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) |
COPD,CHF, & Type 2 diabetic07/17/2007 |
My friends (73 yr old) mother has been diagnosed with copd/emphysema since June 1999, she has for many years adult onset type 2 diabetic & last year July diagnosed also with CHF, she has edema all over, hands, face, swollen neck & shoulders, also jaundice on palms of hands, i think may be from meds she`s on, she has been on 24/7 oxygen all 8 yrs since diagnosed & is also taking buprofen 900mg, glyburide 2.5mg, lisinoprol 12mg?, norvasc 2.5mg, omeprazole 20mg, flovent afa22mg,atrovent fha,serevant 50mg,diprolene cream 60mg & taclonex 60mg, she sleeps pretty much the whole day, is house ridden except for doctor appointments, i have just been being supportive to my friend to help him understand his mother`s symptoms thru this period of time since he is her caretaker, his sister takes her to the doctor`s appts., is this end-stage copd? he thinks seeing her decline the past 6 months physically that she is near death, she was in hospital last Sept, also had glaucoma then for both eyes surgery was done, i know i`m just a friend can u give me any input other than what i have been reading in books & internet of her current condition? is this end-stage copd now? Thanks for any help u can give for my friend.
It is difficult to say what stage emphysema your friend's mother is in without knowing other clinical information about her such as pulmonary function test results. Per your description, she could have severe (or Stage III) emphysema. The fact that she also has heart failure makes it unclear as to whether the current symptoms are mostly lung or heart related. Oxygen, medications, and supportive care are all appropriate.
