Age and untreated endometriosis07/20/2007 |
I was wondering if letting endometriosis go untreated could cause any harm? I am 44 yrs old and have been told by gynocologist that I probably have endometriosis. This is due to heavy bleeding and cramps and quite a lot of rectal bleeding throughout my period. Although never had a laproscopy done to confirm this. She did try me on birth control pills which haven`t helped much. I have read somewhere that the rectal bleeding is usually a sign of endo in the more advanced stages.
Is this true and what if any harm will come by not really doing anything and just tollerating discomfort until menopause? Thank you.
It is not common to be diagnosed with endometriosis at 44, but it can happen. The effects of endometriosis usually decline with age especially as you near menopause. If you can tolerate the discomfort, you are probably all right to observe, but the rectal bleeding needs to be further evaluated to rule out other causes of bleeding like colonic polyps or even colon cancer. Endometriosis rarely causes rectal bleeding, but it can be a cause.
