Pulmonary Fibrosis

Live or die?

07/23/2007

Question:

i have fibrosis and emphysema, my gp has not mentioned life or how long i may have of it , what do you think?

Answer:

There are many types of interstitial lung disease including UIP (usual interstital pneumonitis), DIP (desquamative pneumonitis), NSIP (non-specific interstitial pneumonitis, and RBILD (respiratory bronchiolitis interstitial lung disease). In addition to these, there are dozens of other causes of interstitial lung disease including occupational, drug reactions, and hypersensitivity (allergic) causes.

The first step is to clarify the specific type of fibrosis that you have and also to determine the severity of the emphysema. Each type of interstitial lung disease has a different life expectancy and even then, the life expectancy is in averages, so the individual person may have a shorter or longer life than the average.
