Pap smear

07/25/2007

Question:

I had a pap smear at my annual physical. At that time, my doctor saw that I had a cervical polyp and scheduled to have it removed a few weeks later. It was a very quick and easy procedure. My pap smear came back such that the doctor said we need to repeat the Pap in six months and she thinks it is a result of the polyp that we removed. She does not seem concerned. I`m nervous. What is the science of what she is saying? I would like it redone immediately. Am I being unreasonable?

Answer:

A pap smear could not only be normal or abnormal, it could also show "atypical cells of unknown significance". This can occur because of inflammation, irritation, etc. It doesn't warrant a biopsy, nor should it be ignored until next year. It can be repeated to look for persistence or resolution. To repeat it immediately doesn't give it time to show what it is going to do. Although I don't have you result here, I would assume this was the result. If you are concerned, I would ask that your doctor give you a better explanation.
