Tiny bumps in my mouth

08/09/2007

Question:

For about 4 or 5 days I have had little tiny red bumps in my mouth (on cheeks and roof of mouth), which feel strange and sometimes burn when I eat. I have CLL and wonder if it is something I should be concerned about. The only thing I`ve done differently lately is that I started taking alpha lipoic acid (only about 3 pills total) but then stopped. Could it be a reaction to that? Thank you very much.

Answer:

What you are describing does not sound serious and probably does not represent a reaction to the alpha lipoic acid. Depending on the size and distribution of the bumps, they could represent a mild viral infection or possibly mild inflammation of some of the minor salivary (spit) glands that can be found in these areas. At this point, I would suggest that you avoid spicy and hot drinks/foods that might irritate these bumps. Should they persist for more than a week without improvement, become larger or more numerous, you should see your dentist or a dental specialist for a first-hand diagnosis and treatment if needed.

Good luck!
