Xanax during pregnancy?

08/27/2007

Question:

I have been taking Xanx for 11 years on and off. When I was pregnant with my first son I stopped the xanax after 16 weeks (i did not need it). However there is alot more anxiety in my life this time. My husband had a massive heart attack five months ago and just alot of stress in my life. Needless to say I am still taking .25 three times a day. My question is how harmful is this to my baby? There is so much conflicting information out there I would just like an honest answer. I don`t know what to do. I fear that if I stop the Xanax the anxiety I will be dealing with will be more harmful to my baby than the medication if that is even possible. I just don`t know. Thank you so much for your help.

Answer:

Xanax is listed as a category D which means there is evidence of fetal risk but there may be indications to take the medication if the benefit outweighs the risk. Only you and your physician can decide if the medication is worth taking.
