Minus 5q-syndrome08/07/2007 |
My mother is 83 she has the Minus 5Q-Syndrome. She did not tolerate Revlimid well. The dr. would now like to start her on hydrea? What are the side effects? Will this cause leukemia?
Typically hydroxyurea (Hydrea) is well-tolerated with minimal side effects. The risk of developing leukemia is also quite low with this drug. It is not a commonly used drug in MDS (which is what I presume she has given your description of the 5q-syndrome), so it is not clear as to the reason it is being used.
I would suggest asking her doctor the reason and rationale for the drug as it is difficult to say much more without more information and having a chance to evaluate and examine her in person.
