what type of tissue are they looking for when doing a stereotactic mammotome biopsy? what would the tissue show?
The doctor is determining whether there is cancer in the breast or not. A piece of breast tissue is taken out of the breast with a large needle (it's numbed up first so it doesn't hurt). The specific tissue that is removed is what looks abnormal (unusual) on mammogram or ultrasound or feels abnormal on exam. That tissue is sent to the pathologist to look at under a microscope. The Pathologist then tells your doctor whether you have cancer or not.
