Foods to avoid when you have Polycythaemais v08/22/2007 |
Specifically, which are the foods to avoid when you have polycythemia vera? My husband was told not to eat red meat and leafy green vegetables. What about Veal? Is lettuce ok? How about basil, etc...?
There really are not a lot of foods to avoid, assuming that you are getting the appropriate care. The foods you describe have significant iron content, but if you are getting regular phlebotomies or chronic treatment with Hydrea (hydroxyurea), your diet should not really make any difference. Avoiding vitamins (with iron) or iron supplements does make sense though. I hope this helps out.
